Among the billions of historical records housed at the National Archives throughout the country, researchers can find information relating to immigrants from the late 1700s through the early 2000s. The National Archives preserves and makes available documents created by Federal agencies in the course of their daily business.

The records are arranged by port or airport of arrival. Use Form NATF 81 or order online to obtain copies of inbound federal passenger arrival manifests for ships and airplanes, 1820-1959.

Card manifests for each person were used to record information about arrivals in the United States across land. These cards contain information similar to the information on passenger lists. Immigration Records - Library and Archives Canada
Library and Archives Canada holds immigration records, up to and including 1935 for arrivals at ocean and border ports. There are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865. From 1865 onwards, passenger lists and border entry lists were the official record of immigration; no immigrant applications or files exist.
